Eviction Diversion Program Focus of January Lunch-In
After research conducted by the Eviction Lab at Princeton University, the City of Richmond was noted to have the second-highest eviction rate of any city in the country. To address a critical piece of this Eviction Crisis in Richmond, in partnership with the City of Richmond, Housing Opportunities Made Equal of Virginia (“HOME”), and the Central Virginia Legal Aid Society (“CVLAS”), the Greater Richmond Bar Foundation launched a pro bono program for volunteers to serve as Third Party Neutrals in eligible unlawful detainer (eviction) cases filed in the City of Richmond General District Court. Volunteers facilitate a payment plan for eligible tenants and willing landlords to keep people in their homes, to connect tenants to financial assistance and financial literacy education, as well as to avoid an Unlawful Detainer judgment.Join MRWBA on January 13th as Jennifer Daglio from Hunton, Andrews Kurth and Sarah Warner from ThompsonMcMullen delve into the program, the need for the program and provide training for those who would like to assist in this volunteer opportunity. Thanks to our Platinum Sponsor, Prospect Blue, and our Gold Sponsor, Bowen Ten PC, for their support.
Judicial InterviewsThe Judicial Candidate Endorsement Committee will be participating in interviews of candidates for the upcoming vacancy on the Richmond City Circuit Court being left by the retirement of Judge Joi Taylor. The interviews are scheduled for January 8, 2021 and a report of our endorsements should be posted on the Members Only
page of the website the following week.
Virtual Social Focused on In-House Career PathOn Thursday, December 10, we held a virtual membership social with a spotlight on the in-house counsel career path. We were thrilled with the engaging discussion between our members and our in-house panelists Lisa Booth of Dominion Energy and Lindsay Krause Blackwood of Brink’s. Erin Kelly, MRWBA Board Member and in-house counsel at CVSHealth, moderated. Thank you to our generous sponsor McGuireWoods and to our other MRWBA representatives, Blaire O’Brien, Mary Kidd and Rochelle Reed for assisting with the event. It was an enjoyable evening for all.
