Just 1 percent of more than 500,000 civil cases handled in Virginia’s general district courts each year have lawyers on both sides. In the state’s juvenile and domestic relations courts, neither party has a lawyer in almost 90 percent of the 75,000 custody, support and other contested adult civil cases. Due to stagnation in financial support for legal aid programs, the need for pro bono services is growing. This presentation will cover the extent of the current justice gap in Virginia, as well as the new voluntary pro bono reporting rule which goes into effect December 1.
This program is approved for 1 hour of ethics CLE credit.
